Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls.  This piece has 36 swirling ribs that extend from the rim to the base.  There is a ridge and then the flat part that creates the “facet”.  The result is a striking visual appearance on the bowl as the light reflects against the various surface angles with such tightly spaced ribs!  The bowl is polished to a glossy shine.  There is a plain, fully polished lid for the top.  It is from 1993.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

Denny Gutierrez

Denny learned to make pottery from his mother, Katherine Gutierrez. His sister JoAnn Million and aunt Clara Stone are also well-known potters. Denny Gutierrez created his distinctive "faceted melon bowl" style in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004, he was governor of Santa Clara Pueblo. His pottery won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market over the years and added a new dimension to the pottery's ribbed or melon bowl style.
