Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls.  However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This bowl has a low shoulder and sloping sides.  It is very highly polished.  There are 40 feathers painted onto the polished surface. Note how they are painted at a slight angle.   Above the feathers are rain designs.  The jar is polished to a glossy shine and traditionally fired.  It is from 1987.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

Denny Gutierrez

Denny learned to make pottery from his mother, Katherine Gutierrez. His sister JoAnn Million and aunt Clara Stone are also well-known potters. Denny Gutierrez created his distinctive "faceted melon bowl" style in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004, he was governor of Santa Clara Pueblo. His pottery won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market over the years and added a new dimension to the pottery's ribbed or melon bowl style.
