Gutierrez, Denny – Melon and Impressed Avanyu Jar (1991)
Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls. This piece is a combination of the impressed and melon designs. The area above the shoulder is impressed or indented with a stylized water serpent (avanyu). The avanyu was probably inspired by the early work of Sarafina Tafoya when she made some of the first carved pieces in the 1920’s (see last photo). Below the shoulder are 16 straight flat faceted melon ribs. The jar is from 1991. It is very highly polished and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
