Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls.  However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This is one of his distinctive redware pieces.  The piece is an unusual shape for his pottery with a low, sharp shoulder.  The entire surface is stone polished and then painted with 36 feathers.  Note how they have a slight angle to them, which is distinctive of his pottery. The symmetry of the bowl and precision of the painting is exceptional  The jar is from 1988, so very early in his career.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
