Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowls.  However, he also created exceptional painted vessels. This is one of his few redware pieces.  The jar is fully polished red and painted with a matte creme colored slip. The design is VERY tightly painted with 52 feathers.  Note how he painted his feathers as they are at a slight angle swirling around the jar.  As well, above the feathers are circular sun designs.  The symmetry and precision of the painting is exceptional  The jar is from 1987, so very early in his career.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.
