Denny Gutierrez was known for his faceted melon bowl. This bowl has a round shoulder and it has 25 swirling faceted ribs.  They extend from the rim to the base.  The entire bowl is fully polished.  The lid is unusual with 32 straight ribs extending upward.  The top part of the lid extends upward and it is fully polished.  The piece is from 1998 and was purchased directly from the artist.  It is very highly polished and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Denny Gutierrez”.

Denny Gutierrez

Denny learned to make pottery from his mother, Katherine Gutierrez. His sister JoAnn Million and aunt Clara Stone are also well-known potters. Denny Gutierrez created his distinctive "faceted melon bowl" style in the 1990s. From 2000 to 2004, he was governor of Santa Clara Pueblo. His pottery won numerous awards at Santa Fe Indian Market over the years and added a new dimension to the pottery's ribbed or melon bowl style.
