Eugene Gutierrez was a son of Victoria Gutierrez and a grandson of Faustina Gutierrez.  He was a brother of noted potters Sally Tafoya, Effie Garcia, Julie Gutierrez, and Ethel Yazza. This is one of his classic clay Pueblo Dancers.  It is a Deer Dancer, which is both matte and polished.  In the Pueblo world, the Deer Dancers have pine or evergreen branches as part of their headdress.  They are carved into this piece.  There are numerous levels of carving and it has extraordinary detail!  The feathers and kilt are polished, as are other areas in contrast to the matte sections.  This is one of his larger figures.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Eugene Gutierrez.”  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
