Gutierrez, Lois – Jar with Quail and Rainclouds

7.5"w x 8.25"h

$ 1,200.00

This is an intricately painted jar by Lois Gutierrez.  She is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara.  Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This is a water jar shape with a wide shoulder and an elongated neck.  The jar has two scenes with a quail and baby quail.  They are surrounded by a rainbow figure.  Separating them are very complex rain clouds.  Below the shoulder are rain and cloud patterns.  Note the overall complexity of the design and all the various clay colors!  The jar was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Lois 2019”.
