Gutierrez, Lois – Kiva Jar with Heartline Deer, Birds, and Start (2007)

8"w x 8.5"h

$ 1,200.00

Lois Gutierrez is one of the few potters who continues to create traditional polychrome (more than 3 colors of clay) pottery at Santa Clara pueblo.  This water jar has a double kiva step rim.  The jar is painted with a heartline deer on each side.  Behind each deer is a VERY highly detailed bird in the clouds.  On one of the inner lips, there is a star.  Below the shoulder, the jar has plant and cloud designs. The jar is painted with clay slips and there are five different clay slips used for the various colors.  It was painted and then traditionally fired.  It is signed, “Lois” on the bottom.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
