Lois Gutierrez is one of the few potters who continue to create traditional polychrome (more than 3 colors of clay) pottery at Santa Clara Pueblo. This is a wide shoulder jar. On the top of the shoulder is an avanyu, polished red! It is one of the few times she has polished the design. The avanyu is outlined with additional clay. On the shoulder are swirling cloud designs. The jar has at least seven different colors of clay used to paint the design before firing. The jar has been traditionally fired outdoor and overall is a striking coloration. It is signed on the indented bottom of the jar, “Lois”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
