15.5"w x 16.5"h

$ 8,000.00

This is a massive polychrome storage jar by Lois Gutierrez.  Lois is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara.  Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This large storage jar is coil-built and painted with six different colors of clay before the piece is fired.  The storage jar shape creates a lot of volume and space for design.  Around the neck is an avanyu.  Around the body of the jar are four areas with corn. Note how the corn is a different color in each section!  There are two avanyu on each side of the corn plants.  Around the design are double rainbows.  Separating each section are multi-colored clouds with rain and rainbow patterns.  Near the base is a band of cloud designs.  The jar was traditionally fired.  It is from 2014 and it is signed,m “Lois” on the bottom,  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  The last photo is one of Lois sitting next to the piece in her home.  Simply extraordinary.
