Gutierrez, Lois – Open Bowl with Polychrome Cloud Beings (1991)

10.75"w x 11.5" long x 5" deep

$ 1,200.00

Lois Gutierrez is one of the few potters who continue to create traditional polychrome (more than 3 colors of clay) pottery at Santa Clara Pueblo.  This is an open bowl with kiva step-shaped edges.  The rim has painted designs for the four directions.  In the center are four “Cloud Beings” or prayer feathers.  There are lightning, cloud, rain, and corn figures.  They are each painted with native clay slips. Amazingly, this open bowl has over SEVEN different colors of clay for the designs.  It was then traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom of the bowl, “Lois”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
