Gutierrez, Lois – Polychrome Jar with Avanyu (2004)

5.5"w x 5"h

$ 675.00

This is a classic polychrome jar by Lois Gutierrez.  She is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara.  Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This piece has a low shoulder and sloping sides. There is an avanyu painted encircling the jar.  There is a single star in the design.  The body of the avanyu has wave designs and the tongue and tail meet in a classic style.  Note the last photo of a historic bowl with an old-style avanyu design and note how Lois incorporated that into this piece!  Below the shoulder are wave designs.  Did you know that Lois collects each of the different clays from around Santa Clara Pueblo in order to create these colorations?   The piece was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Lois Derek”,  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
