Gutierrez, Mary – 5″ Tall Pojoaque Jar with Deer and Turquoise (1980s)
$ 975.00
Mary Gutierrez (1941-2018) was a sister of Joe Talachy and Stella Tanner. She was known for her miniature pottery. This is the largest piece of her pottery we have come across. The jar is coil-bulit, stone polished, and etched. There are four large deer etched into the clay. Above them is a Mimbres antelope under a rainbow yei. There is also a realistic Pueblo-style Deer dancer. Each of the deer have inset turquoise for the eyes. There are seven pieces of inset turquoise in the jar. It was traditionally fired a deep red coloration. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Gutierrez”. This jar also has her business card, as an important piece of ephemera.
