Gutierrez, Virginia – 11″ Tall Nambe Polychrome Wedding Vase with Avanyu, Sun, and Corn Designs (1990s)
$ 900.00
This is an exceptional and large wedding vase by Virginia Gutierrez. She was of the few polychrome potters from Nambe Pueblo. She was known for her experimentation with various clay slips. This wedding vase has a low shoulder, elongated spouts, and a kiva step shape on the handle. Around the body of the jar is an avanyu. On the sides are corn plants along with rain clouds. The handle has a sun design on both sides. It is a very complex design that is all painted before it was fired. There are at least six different colors of clay used on the piece. It is signed on the bottom, “V. Gutierrez”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
