Gutierrez, Virginia – 9″ Wide Nambe Polychrome Jar with Turtles and Sun Face Designs (1980s)

8.5"w x 5.5"h

$ 650.00

Virginia Gutierrez was of the few polychrome potters from Nambe Pueblo. She is known for her experimentation with various clay slips.  This is one of the largest of her jars we have had in the gallery.  It has a wide shoulder and a short neck.  The piece is painted with four large turtles.  On the back of each turtle is a sun design.  Separating them are areas with a micaceous slip, along with other various clay colors.  There are at least seven different clay colors used on this jar, making it a true polychrome (more than three colors). It is signed on the bottom, “V. Gutierrez”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
