Hicks, Sally – Jar with Plant Designs (1978)

5.5"w x 8"h

$ 250.00

Sally Hicks (b. 1949)  was known for her traditional Navajo (Diné) pottery.  This jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck. The jar has plant designs on two sides with the ends of the plant in relief. The stems of the plant are incised. They are separated by two plants that are incised into the clay. The jar was traditionally fired with great blushes on the surface.  After the firing, it was covered in pinon-pitch.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. H”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There is a second place ribbon with it from the 1978 Gallup Intertribal Ceremonials.  The ribbon is signed by Richard Spivey (who wrote the books on Maria).  To see the piece of her pottery she has in the Smithsonian, click here.
