Juanico, Dolores – Water Jar with Parrots and Plant Designs

5.75"w x 5"h

$ 875.00

Dolores Juanico is a daughter of Marie S. Juanico and a granddaughter of Dolores Sanchez.  She learned to make pottery from her mother.  Each piece is coil built, painted with bee-weed (black), and painted with native clay slips.  Much of Dolores’s pottery is inspired by historic Acoma vessels. This jar is a classic Acoma shape with a round shoulder and a short neck.  The jar has two parrots as the design. They are painted with a deep red clay and encompass two sides.  Separating them are rainbows with plant designs in the center.  It is a striking use of design, white space, and classic designs.  The jar was inspired by an Acoma vessel from 1870-1880.  It is signed on the bottom, “D. Juanico”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, restoration, or repair.
