$ 125.00

Erma Kalestewa is a daughter of noted Zuni potter Juanita Kalestewa and the granddaughter of Nellie Bica.  She is known for her pottery and Zuni owls.  Erma began making pottery in the 1960s.  She learned to make a variety of styles of traditional Zuni pottery and the Kalestewa family continues to fire their pots traditionally with sheep manure outdoors.  This bowl ahs two frogs in relief, looking into the top of the bowl.  On the sides are two tadpoles.  The Frog, or “Dakkya” in Zuni, is a sign of water.  In Zuni Pueblo, frogs often appear on prayer bowls since many of the Zuni prayers and dances ask for water in the form of rain or snow. Cleansing is also a part of Frog’s medicine as well as emotional and physical healing.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “E. Kalestewa”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
