Carlos Laate learned to make pottery from his aunt Jennie Laate and his step-grandmother, Daisy Hooee.  Each piece is coil built and painted with clay slips.  This jar has a classic Zuni heartline deer motif.  Each deer has a bird painted on its pack and there are clouds around the rim.   The heartline deer is a traditional image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal.  The jar is signed, “Carlos Laate”.  It is from 2004.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
