Carlos Laate learned to make pottery from his aunt Jennie Laate and his step-grandmother, Daisy Hooee.  Each piece is coil built and painted with clay slips.  This jar has a classic Zuni heartline deer motif and rosette design.  There are two deer, and they are under a rain design.  Separating them are large flower roesttes.  The heartline deer is a traditional image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal.  The jar is signed, “Carlos Laate”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
