This is a classic water jar by Eric Lewis. It has a round shoulder and a short neck. The jar is fully painted with a full face of a lion on one side. Note how the shape of the lion head perfectly matches the shape of the jar! I remember back in the 1980s when Joseph Lonewolf first started to experiment with non-southwestern animals on his pottery and it’s great to see Eric taking a similar creative path. As the jar is turned, there is additional swirling bird and lightning imagery. It is a complex piece in design yet the imagery flows perfectly across the surface and matches the shape. The strong graphics on Eric’s pottery give them a modernist appearance. However, look closer and you can see a variety of traditional designs that he has used for the designs that are all based on traditional Acoma patterns. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Eric Lewis 2021”.
