This is a classic-style tall water jar by Eric Lewis.  It has a high shoulder and a short neck. The jar is fully painted and there is a stylized deer on one side.  It is a more complex design and note how the use of the negative space amplifies the form of the antlers!  The remainder of the jar has angular designs, meant to represent the look of the deer in the forest.   It is a complex piece in design yet the imagery flows perfectly across the surface and matches the shape.  The strong graphics on Eric’s pottery give them a modernist appearance. However, look closer and you can see a variety of traditional designs that he has used for the designs that are all based on traditional Acoma patterns. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Eric Lewis 2021”.
