Lewis, Lucy – Bowl with Lightning Design and Twisted Rim (1960s)

4.5"w x 3.75"h

$ 1,000.00

Lucy M. Lewis is among the best-known Acoma potters for her pottery revival beginning in the 1950s.  This jar is one of her most famous designs.  It is a lightning pattern that encircles the entire piece.  The bowl has straight sides.  What makes it unusual is the “twisted” rim.  This is a more complex style for Acoma pottery, and one that was popular in the 1960-70 period.  The twisted rim is slipped with red clay, while the remainder is black-on-white.  The lines are tight and crisp against the white background.  The jar is signed on the bottom “Lucy M. Lewis”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks restoration or repair.  Certainly one of the classic pieces by this important matriarchal potter!
