Lewis, Lucy – Jar with Frogs in Relief (1960s)

7"w x 5"h

$ 3,200.00

This is a very unusual piece by Lucy Lewis, who was one of the great Matriarch potters of the past century.  This jar has a high shoulder and a short neck.  It is fully polished, and there are four applique frogs on the sides of the jar.  They are painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay. The jar was traditionally fired and there is a fire-cloud that extends across the surface.  The style of the frogs is reminiscent of Zuni jars with frogs on the sides.  Whatever her inspiration, it is a unique piece and creative in form, design and coloration.  It is from the 1960s and signed, “Lucy M. Lewis”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
