Lewis, Lucy – Plate with Mimbres Turkey (1960)

7" Diameter

$ 1,075.00

This is a very unusual piece by Lucy Lewis, who was one of the great Matriarch potters of the past century.  This is a shallow plate which is painted with a Mimbres turkey in the center.  It is surrounded by a swirling rain and cloud pattern.  Lucy Lewis first encountered Mimbres pottery in 1958, when she was shown pieces by Kenneth Chapman.  The plate is dated 1960 and it is signed on the back, “Lucy M. Lewis”.  The black for the design is derived from bee-weed, which is a local plant. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
