Lonewolf, Joseph – Large Seedpot with Eagle and Feather Relief Carving (1977)

2.25"w x 2.25"h

$ 3,800.00

This is a complex larger seedpot by Joseph Lonewolf. The piece is fully polished and fired red and it is from  1977.  The piece has several layers of design.  There is a realistic eagle stone polished and carved into the clay.  The eagle has etched feathers on the body and wings.  By the feet is a basket design.  Note the depth of carving behind the wings of the eagle!  As the piece is turned, there are five feathers carved into the clay and overlapping in design.  They are matte polished and each is etched with design.  On the side are carved clouds and step designs.  They are etched with design and highlighted with blue, green, and red clay slips.  The bottom area is fully polished red.  The various levels of carving give the piece a lot of depth for the size!   The seedpot is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joseph Lonewolf”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

I think what collectors saw and recognized was his special relationship with Clay Woman, the spirit who lives in the clay. His belief and respect for her allowed him to tap into his own creative energy, that inexplicable ‘groove’ that every artist seeks but only sometimes reaches. These two elements, Dad’s energy combined with Clay Woman to form these incredible pieces, so alive and realistic that you expected the images to walk right off the pots.”  Rosemary Lonewolf ,Spoken Through Clay
