Loren Ami’s pottery continues to be inspired by traditional Hopi designs and forms. Each piece is coil built, painted with native clays (red) and bee-weed (black) and outdoor fired. This canteen has a classic eagle tail design painted in a style reminiscent of the work of Nampeyo of Hano. Loren also used a white clay slip for two of the areas on the sides of the design. Loren is one of the few Hopi potters who makes such classic canteens and it is a form he learned from Dextra Quotskuyva. Note the red clay slip on both pieces has just a bit of mica in it so that it sparkles. Loren is certainly one of the traditionalist Hopi-Tewa potters to watch, as each new piece reveals his strength as both a potter and an artist! This canteen is from 1997 and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
