Lowden, Anita – Jar with Lighting Design and Animal Handle (1960s)

4"w x 5.5"h

$ 650.00

Anita Lowden was a daughter of Jesse Garcia and a sister of Stella Shutiva. She was one of the earlier Acoma Pueblo potters to use Mimbres designs.   This is an unusual piece of her pottery.  The jar has a handle in the shape of an animal.  There is a lighting design painted with bee-weed on the jar from the neck to the shoulder.  The handle has a fine line design on the back.  Check out the great detail on the handle with the little painted feet and tail on the animal!  The jar has a very modernist style with a strong focus on geometric shapes.  We see very little of her pottery, as she passed away in 1970, just as the Acoma pottery revival was growing in excitement.  However, the work we have had of hers is always beautifully painted and thin-walled.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Anita Lowden”.
