Maho, Garrett – Large Jar with Dragonflies and Swirling Birds

8"w x 6.75"h

$ 1,400.00

Garrett Maho is known for his traditional and innovative Hopi-Tewa pottery.  This large jar is one of the more complex pieces we have had of his work.  The jar has high shoulders and a sloping neck.  The neck has cloud, rain, and checkerboard patterns.  Around the shoulder are very tightly painted swirling birds. They are painted with bee-weed and clay slips.  Note the use of the mauve-colored clay to highlight the design!  It is a striking use of shape and design. The jar was traditionally fired and there are intense colorations in the blushes on the surface.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Garrett Maho”.  Garrett has won numerous awards including the “Helen Naha” Award at Santa Fe Indian Market.
