Maho, Garrett – Wide Bowl with Katsinas

Garrett Maho is known for his traditional and innovative Hopi-Tewa pottery.  This bowl has a wide shoulder and it is fully polished.  The top of the piece is painted with two katsinas along with two large Hopi birds.  One of the katsinas is the Grandmother Katsina.  The piece is painted with bee-weed (black) and highlighted with red clay slips which are stone polished. The bowl was traditionally fired and there and there are blushes on the surface.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Garrett Maho”.  Garrett has won numerous awards including the “Helen Naha” Award at Santa Fe Indian Market.
