Maho, Patty – 10″ Wide Open Bowl with Hummingbird Design (1960s)

10.25"w x 3"h

$ 450.00

Patty Maho (1903-1993) was a sister of Mamie Nahoodyce, a niece of Paqua Naha, and a cousin of Sadie Adams, Lena Charlie, and Joy Navasie.  Interestingly, she never learned to speak English and spoke only Tewa and some Hopi.  While she learned to make pottery, she had difficulty painting designs.  Her sister would often paint her pottery for her, until she was able to master the painting techniques.  She stopped making pottery after her sister passed away in 1980.  This large open bowl has a hummingbird painted in the center (it is probably a Hummingbird moth, not a hummingbird).  The sides had geometric rain, cloud, and wind design that are tightly painted.  It is signed, “Patty Maho”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
