Martinez, Maria – 10″ Tall Long Neck Jar with Avanyu (1920s)

6"w x 10"h

$ 5,200.00

This long-neck jar is a classic piece of early pottery by Maria Martinez from the early 1920’s.  At this time, while Maria was making and polishing the pottery, her husband, Julian Martinez (1897-1943), was painting the designs.  This jar has a round body and an elongated neck.  The neck is painted with a mountain design.  Around the body of the jar is an avanyu (water serpent), encircling the piece. The jar was traditionally fired and has a glossy black surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Marie”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  There is a slight lean, which is not unusual as these pieces were often fired on their sides.  It’s exciting to see a “smaller” piece of this iconic form by Maria as pieces this shape are often over 12″ or 14″ tall!
