Martinez, Maria – 8″ Wide Jar with Plant Designs “Marie” (1920s)

8"w x 7"h

$ 4,400.00

This jar is a traditional piece of pottery by Maria Martinez from the early 1920’s.  At this time, while Maria was making and polishing the pottery, her husband, Julian Martinez (1897-1943), was painting the designs.  This jar has a wide shoulder with a sharp edge and sloping sides. This shape creates a striking surface area for painted designs. The jar has interlocking plant designs with rain and cloud patterns under the leaves.  The jar was fired to a glassy black coloration. It is signed on the bottom, “Marie”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
