This a classic jar by  Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da.  Maria made and stone polished the jar while it was painted and fired by her son, Popovi Da  (1923-1971). Popovi focused on both the painted surfaces of the pottery as well as the firings.  This jar has a low shoulder and sloping sides.  There is a water serpent (avanyu) as the design, which encircles the piece.   The jar was fired to a glassy/slivery black coloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria / Popovi 565”.  The signature has the firing date of “565”, which indicates it was made in May 1965.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.   It is certainly a classic by Maria and Popovi Da!
