This is an early plainware bowl by Maria Martinez. It is from 1920-25 and it was made and polished by Maria Martinez.   These early pieces are signed, “Marie”, although if there is a design, it was Julian who painted the designs.  It was not until around 1925 that they began to sign both names to the pottery.  The bowl is thin-walled and fully polished.  It has a classic shape and even the bottom is fully polished.  The bowl was fired to a glossy black with silvery gunmetal areas. The gunmetal areas are from the heat of the firing.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Marie”.   Definitely a classic in shape, design and coloration!
