Martinez, Maria – Gunmetal Jar with 40 Feathers “Maria Popovi 271”, (1971)

6.5"w x 6"h

$ 5,500.00

This is a striking, very late gunmetal-fired jar by Maria Martinez and her son, Popovi Da.  Maria made and polished the jar while it was painted by her son, Popovi Da  (1923-1971). The jar has a round shoulder and a slightly elongated neck.  It is highly polished and painted with a feather design around the shoulder.  There are 40 symmetrically painted feathers encircling the piece.  The piece is fired to silvery, glassy black. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria Popovi 271“. The firing date signature indicates that it was fired in February 1971, making it a very late piece, as Popovi passed away in October 1971.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair with a striking silvery gunmetal firing.
