Martinez, Maria – Gunmetal Jar with Mountains, Clouds, Rain, and Corn Designs “Marie” (1920s)
$ 3,300.00
WOW! This is richly fired long-neck jar by Maria Martinez from the early 1920’s. At this time, while Maria was making and polishing the pottery, her husband, Julian Martinez (1897-1943), was painting the designs. This jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck. The jar is VERY highly polished and thin-walled. There is a mountain design around the neck. Above the shoulder are swirling clouds with rain designs. Around the body of the jar are square corn designs. It is a unique design that is tightly painted and accentuates the shape of the jar. However, it is the firing that makes this jar so unique. It is a stunning gunmetal firing to the surface, which gives it a silvery shine. It is from the heat of the firing that give it this coloration. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Marie”. It is in nearly excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is outstanding!
