Martinez, Maria – Tall Long Neck Jar with Avanyu “Marie” (1920s)
$ 12,000.00
This long-neck jar is a classic piece of early pottery by Maria Martinez from the early 1920’s. At this time, while Maria was making and polishing the pottery, her husband, Julian Martinez (1897-1943), was painting the designs. This jar has a round body and an elongated neck. The neck is painted with a mountain design. Around the body of the jar is an avanyu (water serpent), encircling the piece. The jar was traditionally fired and has a glossy deep-black surface. It is signed on the bottom, “Marie”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. There is a slight lean, which is not unusual as these pieces were often fired on their sides. The last photo is a postcard of Maria with a similar shaped jar, which is from the 1920s.
