Martinez, Vickie – 10″ Tall Jar with 27 Carved Feathers and Avanyu

Vickie Martinez (b. 1967) is a daughter of Barbara and Manuel Martinez.  Her aunts are Glenda Naranjo and Frances Salazar and her brothers are Sammy Naranjo, Chris Martinez, and Manuel Martinez.  She began making pottery in 1983.  This large jar is coil-built, carved, polished and traditionally fired. The jar is carved with 27 feathers around the neck. Below is a deeply carved avanyu.  The jar is highly polished and fired a glassy black.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Vickie Martinez”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
