Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This long-neck jar is from 1989.  It is a transitional piece that combines carving and sgraffito areas of design.   The jar is deeply carved with cloud and lightning designs.  There is a central medallion that is fully incised with a feathered water serpent.  Note how there are two rows of tightly etched feathers!  The piece was traditionally fired a glassy black.  Grace always had an eye on the complete composition of a piece and made sure it was aesthetically pleasing and technically precise.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
