Medicine Flower, Grace – Multi-Color Seedpot with Eight Rabbits (1986)

2.25"w x 3"h

$ 1,875.00

This is a large seedpot by Grace Medicine Flower.  It is from 1989.  It is fully polished and fully designed.  Around the top third of the piece, there are five realistic rabbits.  They are each highlighted with white clay.  They are surrounded by grass or even a butterfly, that are highlighted with green clay.  Below the shoulder are three more realistic rabbits.  The piece has an amazing amount of design work surrounding the rabbits.  Grace only used various colors of clays for a short time as she was given them by her brother, Joseph Lonewolf.  When she ran out, she wasn’t able to get them from him again.  The use of color on her exceptional designs always adds additional dimension to the pieces.  All the sgraffito was done before the piece was fired. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks restoration or repair.

When the pottery comes out the way she should, it’s always the Clay Lady. She’s the one who’s giving you all this. She’s a piece of clay in your hands that you were blessed with. For all the years I’ve been potting it’s taught me patience. If it breaks in the fire, then there’s next time. Have patience, enjoy what you are doing, and really, really talk to the Clay Lady. Like my dad said, prayers and patience.”  Grace Medicine Flower, Spoken Through Clay
