Medicine Flower, Grace – Round Jar with Mimbres Figures, Animals and Lid (1991)

3"w x 4.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 2,500.00

Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This jar is from 1991.  It is a period when she was combining carved areas with etched designs.  The jar is round in shape and has a short neck.  On one side there is a medallion with three Mimbres figures.  Two are Flute Players and one is a Ram Dancer.  As the piece is turned, there are Mimbres-inspired Big Horn Sheep and antelope as the design.  They are each etched into the clay and appear underneath a rainbow.  The remaining areas are fully polished and the jar was fired a deep red coloration. It has one of her classic stopper lids that fits perfectly into the jar.  Grace always had an eye on the complete composition of a piece and made sure it was not just aesthetically pleasing but also technically precise.  Interestingly, Grace did all of her etching/sgraffito in the clay before the pieces were fired, which added to their overall difficulty.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
