Montoya, John – Sandia Pueblo Bowl with Quail and Kiva Step Rim (1990s)

John Montoya was one of the few potters from Sandia Pueblo. It is one of the smaller pueblos in New Mexico.  This open bowl is painted with black, white, and red clay slips.  The interior has a Mimbres-style quail along with a corn plant and raincloud.  The rim of the bowl has a kiva step cut-out. The exterior is painted swirling birds, clouds, and rain designs.  It is a small bowl with a variety of designs and all, tightly painted.  It is signed on the bottom, “John Montoya”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
