This is one of the largest pieces we have had from Helen “Featherwoman” Naha in a while!  Helen created distinctive pottery using the white kaolin clay slip throughout her career.  The designs were all painted using bee-weed (black) and natural clay slips.  She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law, Paqua Naha yet had her own style in form, imagery, and composition. This jar has a wide, low, round shoulder and a short neck with an out-turned rim.  The jar is painted with a Bat Wing design that extends down below each shoulder.  Take a closer look at the design and note the exceptional precision of the lines on this jar!  The bottom has her hallmark “feather”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Did you know that Helen would always try and make the opening of her jars large enough so she could get her hand in and polish the interior? Of course, this jar is no exception and the interior is fully polished.
