Les Namingha has, over the years, created exciting variations in his pottery with new painting and technical styles. This is a new jar with a low, double shoulder in the Zuni style. The jar has an oval opening on the top. It is entitled, “Ace”.  Les said of this piece:

“The piece continues in a series of vessels using a layering process.  The jar has multiple layers of graffiti designs.  I wanted to create a graffiti “wall”.  There are faces and words one the jar, including, “Ace”.  Once I had the top layer painted, I wanted to cover the remainder of the surface with Hopi birds and more classic pottery designs.  There are also a variety of colors used to build up on the surface. I often listen to music when designing a jar and for this piece, it is the color bold color areas that are the “base lines”.

The jar has bold graffiti designs and numerous Hopi-style birds.  The birds are filled with traditional Hopi-Tewa designs.  The result is a striking jar that relies on a simplicity of design and form.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Les Namingha”.
