Namingha, Les – “Checkerboard Sunset” Jar
This jar by Les Namingha is one of his classic shapes which allows design and form to flow together. The jar is fully painted and a cloud motif in the background on the top. Over that are Hopi-Tewa birds on one side and a checkerboard cloud pattern on the other. Both sections are very intricately painted and stand out on the clouds. Below the shoulder are more geometric pattern patterns painted to represent the earth, grass, trees, and water. There are two additional Hopi style birds painted in red and outlined in yellow, over water designs. It is a complex and striking jar. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Les Namingha” 2019.
