Namingha, Les – “Hopi Birds and Zuni Sky” Jar

7.25"w x 8.5"h

$ 4,000.00

This is a striking jar by Les Namingha.  He is known for his modernistic shaped vessels and painted designs.  He learned to make pottery from his aunt, Dextra Quotskuyva.  This jar has high shoulders and a short, asymmetric neck. The jar is fully painted with layers of designs.  There are geometric shapes, then Zuni sky designs with pointillism dots. The dots are more associated with Zuni and Shulawitsi or the “Zuni Fire Katsina” which has multi-colored dots over the body.  The top layer of design has Hopi style birds with traditional Hopi patterns making up their designs.  It is always interesting when Les utilizes imagery from both Zuni and Hopi.  It is a complex but visually striking piece!  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Les Namingha” 2019.
