Namingha, Les – Wide Pointilism Butterfly Wings Jar (1990s)

8.5"w x 5"h

$ 2,400.00

This jar by Les Namingha is a traditional piece of his work from the 1990s.  It is coil-built from Hopi clay painted with bee-weed and natural clay slips and traditionally fired.  The jar is fully polished. It is painted with a variety of butterfly wings.  Each of the wings is overlapping and is highlighted with pointillism dots in red, white, brown, and black clays.  It is interesting how Les uses the clay in layers of dots, creating new colorations of white over red or white over red over black.  Very striking!  Note that as the jar is turned, a wing or antennae extends downward.  The jar has blushes from the traditional firing.  It is signed, “Les Namingha” and note the polished swirl on the base, which is how he signed his early work.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
