While Les Namingha creates a variety of jars, there are those few which are dynamic balance of form and design. This wide shoulder jar combines a variety of complex pattern which move the eye with a sense of excitement across the surface of the piece. The bottom of the jar is painted in a geometric manner and gives this piece its title, “Zig Zag”. However, it is the top which creates the visual urgency. The contrasting angular, linear and swirling “flame” lines are striking. The colors also work together to draw the eye across the surface, from the black & white to the red tonalities. One of our favorite parts to this jar is the simple turned out rim, which is painted a deep black. The contrast to that is the indented base. Somehow these bring all the complexity together because they are the tactile parts of the jar which demand for it to be held. The jar is signed on the bottom. We certainly look forward to more exciting pieces by Les Namingha.
